For many brides, wedding dress shopping begins around 8–12 months before the wedding.

If you're purchasing a gown through a bridal boutique, your dress may need to be ordered from the designer. Made-to-order wedding dresses can have lengthy lead times, so it's important to allow plenty of time between ordering your gown and your wedding date.

At this stage, don't worry if the sample dress doesn't fit you perfectly.

Wedding dress samples are often available in a limited range of sizes, and it's completely normal for a gown to be too long, loose, tight or simply not sitting quite where it should.

The important thing at this stage is finding the dress you love.

The perfect fit comes later.

Once your dress has been ordered, it's time to start thinking about wedding dress alterations.

I recommend booking your alterations specialist at least 4–6 months before your wedding date.

You may not actually start altering the dress at this point — and that's perfectly normal!
